Gram’s top 4 tips for Plastic Free July

Gram’s top 4 tips for Plastic Free July

The world's population is finally becoming aware of the environmental impacts of plastic. Plastic free July is a movement designed to increase that awareness, and provides you and millions of others with actionable steps to reduce your use of plastics.

The situation surrounding plastic waste is getting out of hand, with around three quarters of the waste found around the Australian coast being plastic based.

When you consider that it takes just one piece of plastic to kill a turtle, you can quickly understand why so much plastic waste around our coastline is bad for marine life.

The state of plastic pollution didn’t reach this point at once. Studies show that scientists had been aware about the plastic problem since the early 70’s. However plastic waste generation has nearly doubled from 2000 to 2019 making movements such as Plastic Free July extremely important.

If you have been wondering what this movement is all about then keep reading because Gram Sustainable will explain what it’s all about and how you can be a part of Plastic Free July.

What exactly is Plastic Free July?

Before we explain how you can be a part of Plastic Free July, it is essential for you to know what this movement is all about. The Plastic Free Foundation has pioneered the Plastic Free July movement to curb plastic waste and raise awareness about the harmful impacts of plastic. This movement started in 2011 from Australia, however it has become a worldwide campaign by now.

The initiative gives people the motivation they need to try to reduce their use of plastic and bring down plastic waste. This movement helps millions of people do their part to stop plastic pollution so that our streets, oceans, and communities can be cleaner and stay beautiful.

Tips to reduce plastic waste

Switch to reusable coffee cups

Removing disposable coffee cups from your daily regime doesn't mean you have to give up coffee. Reusable cups can be used to get coffee at your favourite café, and we promise the coffee still tastes as good as it does in single use cups.

Looking for a quality cup. Gram has some here.

Keep a reusable bag with you at all times

The reusable bag is the easiest way to reduce your plastic waste. Many grocery stores and supermarkets now ask customers to bring their own bags, and Gram Sustainable is one of them.

Keeping some small bags in your purse or pocket is a great way to make sure you never have to settle for plastic bags.

We have the perfect set of reusable shopping bags here if you're looking for some.

Say no to single use plastic straws

Straws may be small, but considering how many straws get thrown away every day makes it a big problem. So you can either stop using plastic straws all together or carry a reusable straw with you to reduce your plastic waste.

Order a stainless steel or bamboo straw from here.

Carry a reusable water bottle

This is an easy change to make during Plastic Free July because there are so many different types of reusable water bottles available. We recommend getting two bottles, one for work and one for your daily errands that you can keep in the car. Get into the habit of refilling your bottle and you never have to use a disposable water bottle again - and you will save a heap of money.

We have a range of pretty pastel, stainless steel bottles available here.

Now that you know what Plastic Free July is all about and how you can participate in it, all that’s left to do is get geared up for your plastic free month (potentially lifetime).
