11 Best Practices When Refilling Food Containers at a Bulk Food Store

Refilling food containers at a bulk food store is an eco-friendly and cost-effective way to shop for groceries. To ensure you do it in a hygienic and responsible manner, here are some best practices to follow:

1.Clean Your Containers

Before you head to the store, make sure your containers are clean and dry. Wash them with soap and hot water, and allow them to air dry to prevent moisture buildup and contamination. If refilling dairy or eggs please steralise your containers; glass is your best option for these products.

2.Bring the Right Containers

Select containers that are suitable for bulk food items. Glass jars, reusable cloth bags, and food-safe plastic containers with secure lids work well. Ensure that they are free from cracks, chips, or defects that could harbor bacteria.

3.Weigh Your Containers

We can weight your containers before you fill then. We will then make a little note on your container that we will tare at checkout.

4.Use Scoops and Tongs

Always use the provided scoops, tongs, or utensils to transfer bulk foods from bins to your containers. Avoid using your hands to maintain hygiene and prevent cross-contamination. Ironically, we are all about single use utensils at Gram. After you use your utensils pop them in the baskets provided so that we can give them a wash.

5.Avoid Spills

When filling your containers, pour or scoop the food items carefully to prevent spills and messes. Use a funnel for powdery or fine ingredients. We are all for reducing waste at Gram.

6.Respect Cross-Contamination Rules

Be mindful of food allergens and try to avoid cross-contamination. Do not mix different types of foods in the same container. In our store we are one-scoop one-product. Do not use the same scoop for multiple products.

7.Label Your Containers

Label your containers with the product name, PLU (price look-up) code if applicable, and any other relevant information to ensure accurate pricing and easy identification at home and checkout.

8.Be Mindful of Food Safety

Pay attention to expiration dates, and ensure the products you're refilling are within their recommended storage conditions (e.g., temperature and humidity). If you're unsure, ask the store staff for guidance.

9.Practice Good Hygiene

Maintain good personal hygiene when shopping. Wash your hands before handling food containers and after touching surfaces or your face. We provide hand sanitiser in store.

10.Be Environmentally Conscious

Consider the environmental impact of your choices. Opt for reusable containers rather than single-use bags whenever possible.

11.Ask Questions

Don't hesitate to ask store employees for assistance, product recommendations, or any questions you might have about the refilling process.

By following these best practices, you can make your bulk food shopping experience safe, eco-friendly, and efficient while reducing waste and helping the environment.
